Bath show depth of squad

Due to illnesses and work commitments, Bath on paper looked weaker than of late, some of the players on the seconds had been called up, but such is the depth of the Bath squad right now, it still left nearly 20 players without a game when the second’s game was postponed due to a clash with the Rugby. Competition for places, particularly at long pole is fierce.

Swansea at home could only field 10 players, giving Bath the advantage at midfield, fresh legs is crucial. At face Lloyd Wallace and Ken Murray dominated, sand based Astro is a totally different feel to grass and the Bath duo adapted well.

In Defence, Captain Ben Jessup, regulars Sam White and Steve Mooney were unavailable, giving Sam Foster a golden opportunity with club long pole stalwart Paul Bown making up a solid trio alongside Luke Wilmot (acting Captain), Mark Lane rotated with Nige Gates in the goal.

Clearing was quick and slick, and several of the Bath goals came from fast breaks, there was a first goal ever in Bath colours for Richard Bowen-Ashwin and an assist from Lane to Jason He on one of his now trademark runs out of goal.

The score doesn’t reflect on Swansea’s spirit, or competitiveness, they took the game to Bath, but numbers tell, and they just couldn’t keep pace with the West Country outfit.

Bath have scored a lot of goals over the last few weeks, if they keep this up the West Championship could be a possibility, there again, there are tougher tests ahead and Bath cannot be complacent.
