Again Bath took a good sized squad to the West League tournament at Westonbirt, the girls are keen, and Captain Fenella Pinney is determined to move the squad up the table. Bath’s policy is to give game time to as many as possible; this is normally achieved by substituting half the team at half time on a rotation basis, leaving a core of more experienced players to stay on the field, giving stability and some impetus.

The day was very misty to start with, and this seemed to have an effect on the team, they started sluggish, none of the usual drive and energy present. The first game against Cardiff, should have been a lot closer and Bath missed an opportunity to set the scene for the rest of the day in a positive light. Tougher opposition was to follow in the shape of Bath Ladies, Cirencester and league leaders Exeter University.

Despite the sluggish start, Bath began to turn things around; marking tighter, communicating better and most importantly getting back into defence when the ball was turned over.

The second half of the draw saw Bath in the bottom pool with Cardiff LC, Aberystwyth and Birmingham, all teams that, on paper were within the capabilities of the Bath squad.

Fenella Pinney and Sarah Oor began to work well in tandem around the cage and goals began to come easier, mostly from behind the crease drives, at the back there was a little more fight, especially for the ground ball, and the basics began to fall into place. The end of the day saw an unlucky draw against Aberystwyth and a “revenge” win over Cardiff, Birmingham were made to come from behind to win.

The next tournament in January is indoors and small squads, Bath’s captain needs to study the form book carefully
