Bath show a lot of improvement

Despite a lot of the regular players from the university being unavailable due to exams Bath were able to field a squad of 16 players, with a little imagination – Nige Gates playing in goal allowing Mark Lane to play midfield.

In the first game of the season, Cardiff demolished the seconds 23:0, a tough baptism for a lot of the new players, so it is full coudos to the team that they first game of 2015 was more of a match. Although Cardiff were the better side, more assured movement of the ball and players; Bath competed in almost all departments, only a little naivety in the attacking third caused the ball to be turned over more frequently than captain Jonty Terrington would have liked.

In defence, the busiest area of the pitch for Bath, Paul Bown marshalled two relatively new players into a pretty good unit, with Luke Wilmot dropping in from LSM (later moved to straight D), and in between the pipes Nige Gates had one of his best games ever for Bath, either saving or getting a touch onto the pipes time and time again. Knock downs were abundant and the midfield worked hard to make Cardiff work for their goals, there were very few “cheap” scores against this defence.

At Midfield transition for Bath was a little hit and miss, again due to lack of game savvy rather than skill, but compared to earlier on in the season the improvement was huge. Neil Smith in Particular running well and making astute cuts when in attack, making space for runners and cutters alike, the third Bath goal assisted by Smith showed a cool head under pressure, many would have shot rather than go for the pass.

Yet again the squad shows great potential, if it can keep this improvement up the future looks bright.

Highlights of the game:

Gates in Goal – outstanding

The tussle between Sam King (Ex Bath junior at Cardiff University and temporarily the enemy) and Luke Wilmot – seems they are pretty familiar with each other play.
