Birmingham Cowboys v Bath -Plate Rd 1 Leg 1

Birmingham Cowboys v Bath

31 October 2015

South West Intermediate Plate, Round 1 Leg 1

Final Score

Birmingham 5:6 Bath

Bath travelled to Birmingham for the second time in consecutive weeks, this time in the regional knockout plate competition. The Plate winners will go on to play the East equivalent at the end of the season. After the tight game last week, both teams knew what to expect, defences were well aware of each other’s danger men and set up accordingly.

Griffiths Shoots

Bath Started well, holding the ball and pressing for the first goal, Asher Brindley, looking more like a permanent first team player obliged, however that was to be Bath’s highlight for most of the game. Bath just could not play any cohesive lacrosse, dropped balls at crucial moments, bad decisions and poor marking, particularly by the midfield meant Birmingham were able to take control of the game. Bath held out till the second quarter but it was a case of only putting off the inevitable, although Mark Lane in goal managed to keep the score down to a minimum with some spectacular saves. The home side started to ease away winning the second quarter 2:0 and then add a further 2 more goals in the third quarter, however a late goal by Simon Griffiths coming off the back post was to prove crucial as it kept Bath within touching distance.

Murray Dodges

Captain Luke Wilmot laid down the law at the break, whatever he said seemed to have an effect, Bath came out with a whole new attitude, led by Wilmot and Owen, the Long Stick Middie, often moving into attack to replace the midfield. A goal by Ken Murray with his trademark dodge from front centre started the comeback; Griffiths added two more to give Bath the lead 5:4 with ten minutes to play. Birmingham however are not known for capitulating and equalised 5 minutes later, and but for Lane could have stolen the game, it was only fitting that the final goal should come from Brindley who ran tirelessly throughout the game.

A good win for Bath who now take the one goal advantage into the second leg at Bath in two weeks’ time.
