Josh Yeoman checks

Bath Dominate and first clean sheet for Tilson and 6 goal haul for Roberts on a very wet and muddy day in Bristol

Wet, soggy under foot, misty, perfect lacrosse conditions. Bath 2’s travelled to Bristol with a point to prove having been knocked out of the flags a couple of weeks earlier. Bolstered by the older King brothers (Sam back from injury and Matt home from University) the bath squad looked well balanced, solid defence in Ben King, Paul Bown and Steve Mooney; protecting Will Tilson in goal.

At midfield Bath put Josh Yeoman to face with a D pole rather than play the traditional LSM role.

Solid wings with Rory Crouch, Sam King, James Runge, Akito Jacques and Laurence Dawson-Smith certainly gave the visiting team mobility and physicality.

In attack Joe Stone and Matt King rotated with Tom Jacques and Nik Roberts.

Barring a couple of omissions, this was a strong squad.

Bristol on the other hand were down in numbers, fielding only 11 for a home game, and with only two D poles, Bath’s plan was simple, keep the game high tempo and run the legs off their hosts.

Bath opened with a sweeping drive and decisive pass from Sam King to Matt King cutting through the defence, this was quickly followed by a trade mark crease goal by Roberts, one of six in the game (this could have been seven, as Sam Kings second goal appeared to be going wide till it took a deflection of the shaft of Roberts’s stick into the net). Roberts had the usual mixture of garbage in front of goal and sharp crease play.

Tom Jacques worked tirelessly cutting across crease all day, taking good feed and shot for the third goal and finishing an excellent fast break at the end of the game. The midfield kept silly mistakes down to a minimum, chose good options on the pass and were physical on the ride, turning a lot of ball over. Nice finishing from Rory Crouch and a rocket from Sam King put them on the score card, in attack, Joe Stone looked to be having an unlucky day, hitting then post and being stripped of the ball at the last moment, but he got his reward with an unorthodox shot from 12 yards out.

Roberts bags 6

Bristol were unlucky to not score in this game, they had plenty of possession, shots on target were blocked by Bath defenders or saved well by Tilson in goal, they never gave up and on another day the score would certainly have been closer.

Bown get physical

Tilson is growing in confidence, his saves are clean and he now has a reasonable out pass, although the squad will have to wait nearly 3 years before he can legally buy a round for the clean sheet.

This was a really balanced and competent Bath performance, and puts the seconds in prime spot to challenge the firsts for the title this year.

Highlights of the game, Joe Stones goal, Laurence Dawson-Smith’s take out and watching the poor Bristol attack man being intimidated by a combination of Steve Mooney and Paul Bown checking with some power and speed whichever way he turned (the option to run away was taken) and of course a clean sheet for Will Tilson, the youngest keeper on the all-time list at 15.
