Bath lose local derby

Bath v Bristol Bombers

1st May 2021

Filton, Bristol

Cotswolds D1

Final Score Bath 8:15 Bristol

Bristol started strongly in the first quarter and with two early goals from 16 and 6, looked like they might run away with the game. Bath grew into the quarter though and hit back with goals from a galloping Gareth Davies and Henry Phillips, assisted by Mike Carey and Si Griffiths respectively. Despite a greasy ball, Bristol managed to add another couple of goals, 16 adding one and former Bath player Owen Edwards the other. Bath closed the gap just before the end of the quarter through an outstanding team goal. Phillips ran the ball into a dangerous area before quick passes allowed Carey to provide another assist for Davies.

Bristol came out strong for the second quarter adding another four goals in the quarter. Their number 5 opened the scoring before Matt King added two goals either side of the hat-trick goal for number 16. Bath scored through Luke Wilmot on crease after a sly feed from James Runge on X. The final action of the half saw Bath ‘keeper Mark Lane receiving a penalty.

Consequently, Bath started the second half with a man down defensive position, but they held firm through the duration of the time penalty. At the other end, Davies weaved and twisted around from X to complete his hat-trick. Wilmot added his second after a long feed from Logan Belcher. Bristol again scored four, this time from four different scorers: numbers 8, 5, 10 and 7 all finding the back of the net.

Early in the final quarter, after Bristol’s keeper strayed offside at the halfway line, Wilmot took quick advantage to take the penalty and score into the unguarded net. Despite protests from the Bristol players, referee Griffiths was unmoved. Wilmot added another after intercepting a shot from Carey on crease and helping it along its direction. Bristol added two goals through 5 and 7 before a slightly bizarre incident led to another. After a check from Alex George on his opposite number, Bath’s defenders and ‘keeper stopped believing the ball had gone out of play. In fact, it had ballooned to the Bristol player stationed on X who fed the number 5 on crease for a simple goal. Despite Bristol’s number 16 taking a two-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, no more goals were scored in the game and the final score finished Bath 8 Bristol 15.
