Bath v Bristol 2nds – Friendly

Given the poor state of affair in the South West League, it came as no surprise that neither the firsts or the seconds had a game on this Saturday; and finding themselves in the same boat and desperate for a game, Bristol bombers seconds were luckily available.

Bristol are an organised outfit, and mobile, however both teams looked rusty, not a surprise given the last time both had played was way back in early December.

The pattern of the game became apparent very early on, Bath winning the face, throwing the ball away, Bristol holding the ball for huge amounts of time with no penetration or goal threat followed by a fast break and a goal from Bath.

Bristol moved the ball around the goal well, making the Bath defence work hard, but within themselves. Bath’s attack got cold, and this contributed to rushing things when in possession.

But as the game wore on, the home team looked more and more comfortable on the ball, and began to assert themselves, even moving the ball around goal once (small beginnings), the problem was that there were always opportunities to go for goal and that tended to override the ideas of disciplined settled attack.

All in all the score rightly reflected the status of the teams, Bath firsts travel to Bristol oin the Flags on the next Saturday, there’s a couple of additions to this team that will make a lot of difference, particularly in midfield.

Highlight of the game, near miss by Captain Wilmot from near his own restraining line at an empty Bristol goal mouth.

Good game for getting some cobwebs out of the collective system.
