Tied game on the road for Bath Men

Camden 3 v Bath

1st March 2025

SEMLA Division 2

Final Score Camden 8:8 Bath

First goal for 16yr old Jon Luca

Bath struggled yet again in the road, needing to borrow players from Cheltenham and Imperial College to get a squad. In the end a useful 12 turned out. Including, a welcome return to the field by Akito Jacques now working in London.

Bath started with a bang, scoring two quick goals in as many minutes, Nik Roberts on the crease (again) and a solo run (fake high score underarm) goal from Akito Jacques.

Bath then seemed to implode, unable to pick up any ground balls, and communication at a minimum, Camden took full advantage, scoring 5 without reply, and going into the first break with a healthy lead.

Tactically Camden concentrated on closing the crease attack down, often doubling up in front of goal. This meant the Bath midfield had more room to run at the defenders. Although untidy (ground ball always a problem) the visitors gradually clawed back the Camden advantage.

A first EVER goal by Jon Luca Piva, after a long cut from the middle of the pitch saw him clear and free in front of the goal. Simon Griffiths picked him out, although there was a moment of panic as JL wasn’t actually looking. Somehow, spotting the ball at the last second, he took the feed and slotted it into the goal nicely, hopefully the first of many.

Bath could also have gone into the half time break all even, a goal from Tom Dexter crossed the line microseconds after the whistle so didn’t count.

This was a game either team could have won, Bath however were the more consistent over the majority of the game (winning the last three quarters 6:3) and had it not been for a terrible 15 minutes in the first quarter might have won comfortably.

It’s a pleasure to play Camden, a tough, friendly outfit.

Bath need some players soon or the future looks bleak. With a huge university on the doorstep and Bristol just down the road, some profile raising is crucial.
