Pre-season friendlies are important, not only for the teams to blow away some cobwebs, but for the arrangements around the game to be tested.
So, getting the changing rooms early enough for the teams to change and warm up was highlighted as important
The catering afterwards at Hampset Cricket also went down well with all the players, Debbie at the club did a great chilli on tortilla chips.
The game was certainly the first of the season for both teams, barely stringing 4 passes together, and plenty of basic mistakes.
The first quarter was a blank for both teams, with neither keeper required to make a serious save.
Quarter 2 saw the home team step up a little, better ball movement (just) and the deadlock was broken by a mazy run through the University defence by Alex George with a nicely placed shot to open the scoring.
Minutes later Bath doubled the lead with a trademark drive from behind goal by Simon Griffiths, drawing the D poles allowing a neat dump pass to Nik Roberts for a left handed quick stick on the crease.
Bath could have had a third but for a cover save against Griffiths on the crease.
Late on in the half a good move from up front by the University left a clear shot on goal, halving the deficit
The third quarter was even on the pitch, both teams creating chances, however the university took advantage of some lax middie defending to score two simple goals.
The final quarte was a more end to end affair, another close-in save on Griffiths and a well saved long shot from Andrew Manser being the highlights for Bath City.
A late goal by the university from a roll back and feed sealed the win for the students 4:2
This was a close game, the students have a lot of new faces to get up to speed for the upcoming BUCS season, and Bath City are looking for some consistency from a turnout point of view given the list of either injured or unavailable players.
The John Harrop Cup on the 10th October might be tight.
