City undone in final minutes of Jon Harrop cup
Jon Harrop Cup
Odd Down
26th October 2024
Final Score Bath 8:9 Bath University
Bath managed a 17-man squad for this local, but important game, now officially in its 10th year, the Jon Harrop Cup, established to commemorate the founder of the club is a piece of silverware worth winning. The students were edging actual games won 5:4 but, taking into account the 2023 conceded game it was officially 5 each.
The university started the game with a bang, winning the first face cleanly and converting a neat fast break, less than a minute in and the boys in blue were in cloud 9.
Kettle at face for Bath is no mug, knowing that winning the ball cleanly was unlikely he began to ensure the fast break didn’t happen again, from that point on the face, although dominated by the University, wasn’t a clear advantage.
The university throughout the game were definitely the more athletic, relying on raw speed and quick stick work, the city side edging the technical ability and structure
Throughout this game there was very little between the sides, but the Bath City goalkeeper, Will Tilsen certainly seemed to work the harder, saving outside shots comfortably as the City defence stopped the students getting much joy from close in.
As the fourth quarter started the City side had carved a 2 goal lead and looked to be in the driving seat, but the students had other ideas, upped the energy and intensity, causing the, up till then, composed City defence to make some fundamental mistakes. Not only clawing the deficit back but stealing the game in the last minutes of the game.
A well-deserved win, in the end for the boys on Blue, City will look to take revenge in 2025
